Pipeline & Piping Surface ECA

A surface array may be considered to examine accessible weld caps, toes and heat-affected zones of conductive piping, and selected surface-breaking crack concerns. The suitability of scanning on coating, curved pipe and irregular weld profiles depends on the probe and reference specimen. ECA is a surface-focused method; buried or volumetric defects need a suitable complementary technique.

Technical context

Inspection scope, suitable probe design, reference standards and reporting requirements should be determined for the actual asset. Where feasibility is uncertain, send the drawings and inspection objective for review.

Inspection objective and method choice

Surface cracking and some near-surface indications are potential targets; scan path, curvature and coating lift-off must be demonstrated.

Different techniques may be complementary. The inspection procedure must demonstrate response to the target indication under the actual material and geometry conditions.

Information for a technical proposal

Pipe material, diameter, wall, weld profile, coating, access, expected flaw orientation and inspection code.

Include expected reporting format, outage or shutdown window, site location and applicable procedure or acceptance criteria.
