Fin-Fan Air Cooler Tube Inspection

Finned air-cooler tubes often use carbon steel and have geometry that complicates standard eddy current interpretation. Near-field array (NFA), remote field, magnetic flux leakage or IRIS may be considered according to material and target damage. NFA is a related array method, not automatically the same probe or procedure as conventional ECA.

Technical context

Inspection scope, suitable probe design, reference standards and reporting requirements should be determined for the actual asset. Where feasibility is uncertain, send the drawings and inspection objective for review.

Inspection objective and method choice

Internal corrosion, pitting and erosion in finned tubing require technique selection against ferromagnetic properties, fin arrangement and access.

Different techniques may be complementary. The inspection procedure must demonstrate response to the target indication under the actual material and geometry conditions.

Information for a technical proposal

Tube ID, wall, alloy, fin type, length, plug details, cleanliness and known corrosion history.

Include expected reporting format, outage or shutdown window, site location and applicable procedure or acceptance criteria.
